During the “Go Local: Experience Chicago” event at the upcoming Tessitura Learning & Community Conference,

attendees are invited to visit any of the 17 Chicago arts and cultural organizations in our Tessitura community.  In this second article of two, we ask a further seven Tessitura organizations what summer in Chicago means to them and what TLCC2019 attendees can enjoy during a visit.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Hailed as one of today’s leading orchestras

Founded in 1891, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performs well over one hundred concerts each year at its downtown home, Symphony Center and at the Ravinia Festival on Chicago’s North Shore. “While the CSO is entertaining outdoor audiences at the Ravinia Festival (one of the best summer activities in Chicagoland), the administration is hard at work planning for the upcoming season at Symphony Center.”

“TLCC attendees can tour our Daniel Burnham-designed venue for free during our Go Local Open House. While here, they can view the opulent Grainger Ballroom and look for the ‘CO’ (for our original name, Chicago Orchestra) inscribed on the walls.”

Lottery Day at the Goodman Theatre

Goodman Theatre

Chicago’s oldest and largest not-for-profit theater

Goodman Theatre has won international renown for the quality of productions, the depth and diversity of artistic leadership, and the excellence of its many community and educational programs.

“At the Goodman, summer is the best time to enjoy a downtown happy hour special before seeing a play in the hub of our city’s theater district.”

“If [TLCC visitors are] not paying attention, they may accidentally run into one of our 76 trombones. Brass-dodging tactics aside, they’ll want to see Mary Zimmerman’s revival of The Music Man.”

Promoting the life-changing, transformational, revelatory power of great opera

Founded in 1954, Lyric Opera of Chicago's mission is to express and promote the life-changing, transformational, revelatory power of great opera.

“In addition to the Lyric family enjoying all the city has to offer, summer at Lyric Opera of Chicago is about assessment and preparation. With our season at a close, we take time to look back to celebrate our successes and learn from our challenges.”

“When they arrive at the Lyric Opera House, attendees will notice that the landmark limestone skyscraper is shaped like a throne facing the Chicago River. Our beautiful auditorium seats 3,563 and we have the biggest stage in all of Chicago.”

Innovative and compelling center of contemporary art

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) is an artist-activated and audience-engaged contemporary art museum, presenting contemporary art and culture in ways that illuminate what it means to be a citizen of both Chicago and the world.

“On Tuesday mornings in the summer we host a farmer’s market on our front plaza and on Tuesday evenings we have free jazz music on our terrace.  Our back gate is open all summer long so visitors and people from the neighborhood can relax in our sculpture garden.”

“People don’t always realize what a chill place the MCA is to just hang out. You can eat your lunch on our front stairs or hang out in our Commons space for civic engagement.”

Wrightwood 659

New kind of arts space and cultural resource

Wrightwood 659 is a new exhibition space conceived for the presentation of exhibitions of architecture and of socially engaged art. It is designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando, who has transformed a 1920s building with his signature concrete forms and poetic treatment of natural light.

“Summertime in Chicago means the warmer weather (finally!), which means lots of people, both locals and vacationers, are in Chicago...which means more visitors to Wrightwood 659.”

“There is some incredible artwork on display in our current exhibition, About Face: Stonewall, Revolt and New Queer Art. It features over 40 artists, who use the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots as a jumping off point to discuss intersectional queerness and queer portraiture.”
